HISTORY OF PAPER LANTERNS
A paper lantern is a lantern made of thin bright coloured paper. Paper lanters comes in various shapes and sizes, as well as various methods of constuction. In there simplest form, they are simply a baper bag with a light source placed inside, although more complicated lantern consists of a collapsible bamboo or metal frame of hoops covered with tough paper.
Paper lantern, orginating from Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220), manlywere used as lamps in ancient china.During the Tqng Dynasty people made lanterns to celebrate their peaceful life while he splendid illuminations symbolized and celebrated the prosperous, strong and powerful country.
Paper lantern symbolises the wish for a brigfht furure. In addition, The chinese believe that while red is a symbol of happiness, gold is a symbol of wealth.
Modern paper lanterns have battery-operated lamps. traditional paper lanterns were made in the image of myths, things from nature, and in the spirit of local culture.
MATERIALS REQUIRED
- News papers
- Woolen thread
- Scissors
- Fabric colours
- Fevicol
- Decorative items
PROCEDURE
- Take a full sheet news paper and divide it equally into 6 parts.
- Take a rounf road in rder to roll the news paper tightly around it.
- After rolling, stick the end of the newspaper with glue so that it will retain its shape.
- Take a small size fevicol bottle and wrap these newspaper rolls around it to make a ring like structure.
- Colour the newspaper rings using appropriate fabric colours.
- Leave it for drying.
- After drying take the rings and tie it one by one attaching each on the 4 ends of the ring to form a rectangle shape.
- Tie some decorative items oin the end of each ring to make it more attractive.
- Place a light sourse within it, so that it will glow, like the video shown.
Paper lantern is an excellant home decor. It helps in reusing many waste materials. Since it has got some few steps to make, even small children can attempt to make a colourful lantern.
